Newest Computer Controller: Your Eyes

       Aptly named Tobii Technology -- spelled with not one, but two "i's" -- unveiled the world's first eye-controlled laptop at CeBIT Tuesday.
Developed with computer manufacturer Lenovo, the laptop uses Tobii's eye-tracking technology to enhance interaction at a glance. Eyeing points on the screen releases information from icons and gadgets, zooms pictures and maps, switches between open windows, and browses email and documents.

The Tobii technology also comes with an energy-saving green feature: The screen automatically brightens from auto-dim when a user first looks at it.
The eye-recognition concept continues a push toward more natural interfaces that has seen a variety of motion-controlled products such as Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Kinect recently introduce new interactive features.
"What we find most exciting are the opportunities that eye control as part of natural user interfaces offers consumer electronics manufacturers in a range of product categories," said Barbara Barclay, general manager of Tobii North America.
On the laptop, however, eye control is limited to a few simple tasks that, up until now, have been hand controlled -- or for some quadriplegics with specially fitted keyboards, controlled by mouth with a joystick-type device.

Eye Spy

Eye-recognition technology has been a common, almost cliched, feature of science fiction and spy movies for decades. A computer recognizes a user's unique "eye print," then opens secret files, a safe door, or access to a devastating weapon.
Until recently, however, eye recognition hasn't been a practical consumer application. Rather, it's been both expensive and esoteric, a situation the right partnerships are starting to change, Tobii CEO Henrik Eskilsson explained.
"More than anything else, the Tobii laptop prototype is proof that our eye-tracking technology is mature enough to be used in standard computer interfaces," said Eskilsson. "To reach a state where the technology is part of the average computer, we need to make it smaller and cheaper. We believe that this can be realized in a couple of years by partnering with the right manufacturer."
The Tobii-Lenovo partnership is rolling out 20 eye-controlled laptops, split evenly between the two firms for development and demo purposes, Hyleen told TechNewsWorld.
The next step involves stepping back and watching -- as consumers watch their monitors.
"We anticipate people will be extremely excited to be able to control their computer with their eyes," Tobii's Barclay explained.
For people already used to staring at a computer screen all day, controlling the action with those same two eyes may be more headache than head rush, however. Technology public relations specialist Richard Laermer told TechNewsWorld that his eyes hurt just thinking about the idea.
Not so, maintained Tobii's Hyleen. "Most users adopt to eye control very quickly."
You don't have to do anything besides look, she pointed out, so it's "not very different from what you already do when sitting in front of a computer screen. Also in this sense, it is truly relaxing."

Eyes Left

The technology might be a little clunky. The prototype lacks laptop portability, hampered by a large hump on its back and an inch-wide strip below the display, both of which accommodate the machine's eye-recognition sensors.
For persons with disabilities, though, the Tobii-Lenovo laptop may represent a substantial breakthrough.
Reports from CeBit indicate the Beta rollout works well enough that great eye coordination isn't necessary. Observers at the product demonstration were able to target small gadgets such as a calculator with little eye-screen calibration, including a frequently-used media quick bar accessed by looking beyond the screen's left side.
The demonstration even included a Superman-style asteroid video game. The object: Blow up asteroids before they impact Earth just by looking at them.
"The smallest rocks were only a few pixels wide, and we could consistently blast 'em," wrote a reviewer at Gamrconnect who partook in the CeBit demo. "The verdict? It works extraordinarily well

REPORTED LOW-BACK PAIN AND RADIOLOGICAL CHANGES AMONG FORMER COMPETITIVE ATHLETES

Back pain increases with age during childhood and adolescence. Furthermore, among young athletes back pain has been reported at high incidences suggesting a relationship to physical activity. The severity of the pain was correlated to radiological abnormalities. The objective of a study conducted in Greece was to re-investigate the occurrence of low back pain among athletes 10-12 years later, compared with a group of non-athletes, and to analyze the association of pain and radiological abnormalities of the thoraco-lumbar spine.
The study was a long-term follow-up of 86 athletes and non-athletes who took part in a radiological study of the spine conducted during 1997-1998 years. The initial study consisted of 13 gymnasts, 13 swimmers, 14 tennis players, 14 soccer players, 15 wrestlers and a reference group of 16 non-athletes of comparable age, all male.  All athletes were highly competitive in their sports for at least 4 years preceding the initial study. During 2008-2009 years, all participants were invited to take part in the follow-up study, and 92% (79 participants) agreed. Radiologic examination included AP and lateral views of thoracic and lumbar spine. All participants filled in a questionnaire on back pain and the consequences of it.
They found that 39 athletes (55.7%) and 9 non-athletes (56%) reported moderate or severe back pain. There was no significant difference in the number of participants with back pain between groups of athletes and non-athletes, except for the higher occurrence of severe back pain in wrestlers (60%) than in the other groups of athletes and non-athletes. No correlation between back pain and the different types of radiological abnormalities was detected. However, there was a higher frequency of pain in the case of disk height reduction.
Former competitive athletes do not report more back pain than non-athletes. If disk height reduction occurs between two long-term radiological follow-ups, there is an increased risk of back pain. Although this is a late sign of disk injury, it seems that the most susceptible anatomical structure of the spine to sports injury is the disk. Understanding the etiology of these injuries could be the key to prevention.

Η μπαταρία Light Catcher σχεδιάστηκε για τον διαγωνισμό IF concept design του 2011, από τους Yung-Hsaing Chang, Ming-Shien Lin και Chang-Ting Lu. Πρόκειται για μια απλή φωτοηλεκτρική μπαταρία, η οποία όμως έχει διαφανές σώμα και μικροσκοπικά φωτοβολταϊκά στο εξωτερικό της.

Συνεπώς, όταν η ενέργεια τελειώνει, η μπαταρία μπορεί να φορτιστεί τοποθετώντας την στον ήλιο. Είναι σε θέση να φορτίσει άλλες συσκευές με τη χρήση καλωδίου 3,5mm και εφόσον κυκλοφορήσει στην αγορά, θα είναι διαθέσιμη σε δύο μεγέθη, το ΑΑ και το ΑΑΑ.  

ΠΟΛΕΜΙΚΕΣ ΤΕΧΝΕΣ ΑΝΤΙ ΓΙΑ ΤΡΕΞΙΜΟ


Τις περισσότερες φορές που χρειάζεται  να ασκηθούμε με  καρδιοαναπνευστική άσκηση στο γυμναστήριο  για να δαπανήσουμε θερμίδες και να αυξήσουμε την αντοχή  μας επιλέγουμε το διάδρομο, το ποδήλατο, το ελλειπτικό μηχάνημα κ.λ.π.
Προσπαθούμε όλο και περισσότερο σε χρόνο και ένταση για να πετύχουμε τους στόχους μας με καθοδήγηση  του γυμναστή.
Υπάρχει όμως κάποια δραστηριότητα που θα δαπανούσε τις ίδιες θερμίδες και θα είχε τα ίδια αποτελέσματα σε καρδιοαναπνευστικό επίπεδο ?
Κι όμως υπάρχει!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Είναι οι πολεμικές τέχνες !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Σύμφωνα με μια έρευνα που διεξήχθη στο  Πανεπιστήμιο της Nebraska (ΗΠΑ)  οι πολεμικές τέχνες έχουν το ίδιο αποτέλεσμα σε καύση θερμίδων και αντοχή όπως και το τρέξιμο ή άλλη μορφή αερόβιας άσκησης.
Οι ερευνητές μελέτησαν 18 άνδρες αρχάριους σε μια τυπική ημέρα προπόνησης στο taekwondo. Η προπόνηση περιελάμβανε κλωτσιές μπροστά, πίσω, ανοίγματα, χτυπήματα κ.λ.π.
Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι ο μέσος όρος των σφίξεων  των αθλουμένων κυμάνθηκε στο 80% της μέγιστης καρδιακής συχνότητας και δαπάνησαν 600 θερμίδες την ώρα. Έρευνες σε γυναίκες έδειξαν  παρόμοια αποτελέσματα.
Άρα πλέον δεν θα πρέπει να σκεφτόμαστε ότι μόνο τα αερόβια μηχανήματα  βοηθούν στους στόχους μας. Οι πολεμικές  τέχνες όπως taekwondo, karate, judo, kung fu, aikido κ.λ.π. όχι μόνο μας διδάσκουν μία ακόμα πολεμική τέχνη αλλά αναπτύσσουν τη δύναμη, την αντοχή, την ισορροπία και η δαπάνη ενέργειας είναι η ίδια με μια άσκηση σε αερόβιου τύπου μηχάνημα όπως διάδρομο, ποδήλατο κ.λ.π.

Flexible LCD Screens


   Samsung Electronics has created a flexible LCD screen that measures 7 inches diagonally, another technology that may one day be used in products such as e-books.

    The display is functionally similar to the LCD (liquid crystal display) panels used inside TVs and notebooks, but with a crucial difference. Instead of containing glass substrates, the screen features a substrate of flexible plastic, allowing the display to bend. The plastic will not break when flexed, according to Samsung, and its pliancy paves the way for flexible color screens.

The new screen, which sports a resolution of 640 pixels by 480 pixels, has twice the surface area of another prototype shown off in January.

     The flexible screens rely on a low-temperature manufacturing process for transistors, developed by Samsung, that does not melt or distort the plastic substrate.

      Several different technologies are vying to become a standard for the flexible and low-energy screens that will be found in a range of consumer devices. Philips and start-up E Ink are promoting a display in which black-and-white microcapsules embedded in a screen flip to create words. Unlike an LCD, E Ink's displays do not require a backlight and are therefore more energy-efficient. Sony has adopted the screens for an electronic book.

    Other companies, meanwhile, tout organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), which also consume less energy than LCDs.

    Samsung is pouring money into OLEDs and has included the technology in some of its cell phones and in prototype TVs. OLED, though, remains a relatively new technology, and questions about brightness, durability and functionality remain.

    By contrast, the properties of LCDs are well-known.

     The flexible LCD panel was developed under a three-year program funded by Samsung and the Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy

1 Thz CPUs for Computers


      Processors utilizing Graphene instead of silicon could end up producing speeds of 1THz (1000GHz) processing. In addition to which, these processors could use standard cooling methods for todays processors (heatsink/fan) and still produce speeds multiple times over the standard cores and even produce LESS heat and therefore LESS power consumption.

      To put this in perspective, modern silicon chips (i7) can be pushed to produce 9.1GHz using the most extreme cooling systems available, and even then it probably can't run at that speed for very long before something fails. Essentially, you could run games without the need for a GPU (except some software limitations means that really isn't quite feasible).

     This is amazing news to the world of computing. If you look at the rates in which processor speeds have been increasing, we hit major brick walls with the standard set up, both in heat and size. This breakthrough could mean the next leap from 3GHz processors of today (based on the average clock speed of an i5) could be massively kick started and in one step we enter the age of THz processors.

What makes this even more interesting is the ease at which these cores can be produced, only minor modifications to the normal production setup has to be made. This means the cores are relatively cheap to manufacture (relatively speaking).

However, the let down is, this is going to be a slow implementation I'm sure. I'd estimate between 5 and 10 years before it's implemented into most computers. By that time it's initial wow-factor will probably have worn off. Still, it'll be interesting to see how these cores are utilized and how far they will be eventually pushed.

Think of it in comparison to the 8085 (10MHz) and how far we pushed silicon chips, over 9000 (no meme intended) times faster. So 1000THz, perhaps, perhaps not. But still, reveal in the glory of the terahertz age.    

New carbon/air battery stores 10x more energy than li-ion


   At the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, Professor Peter Bruce has developed a battery that uses air as a fuel, called STAIR (St. Andrews Air). Early tests show it has the potential to store 10x more energy than existing lithium-ion batteries for applications like electric cars, mobile phones and notebooks.

  The project is funded for four-years and is well into its second year (ending June, 2011). He says, “Our results so far are very encouraging and have far exceeded our expectations”.

   The rechargeable air-fueled STAIR battery follows current research efforts looking to replace the expensive lithium cobalt oxide electrodes in existing batteries with more porous carbon electrodes. These, by their very chemical nature, allows the lithium ions and electrons within the cell to react with oxygen in normal air, which acts as a reagent in place of the normal chemicals found inside of a sealed battery.

      Should early tests prove out through continued research, such a design will be cheaper to produce than today’s lithium-ion batteries, while providing notably more power, up to 10x that of today’s traditional lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.
